Living Biographical Sketch: Specialist Four Harley DeLong was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service during the Vietnam War. SPC 4 DeLong's Army Commendation Medal citation reads: "Specialist Four DeLong distinguished himself by meritorious service in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period June 1968 to June 1969 while assigned initially to Company D, 3d Battalion, 7th infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Serving as a team leader, Specialist Four DeLong demonstrated outstanding professionalism in accomplishing his assigned duties, thus contributing significantly to his units enviable combat records. On extended combat operations and patrols, Specialist DeLong displayed alert and aggressive leadership and instilled in his men the confidence and determination required to perform effectively. His resourceful courage and desire to excel earned him the respect and admiration of all his fellow soldiers. Specialist Four DeLong's loyalty, diligence and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, and the United States Army."

Arrived in North Africa December 1942, Awarded Silver Star February 1, 1943, fought at Kasserine Pass, witnessed General George S. Patton’s arrival as commander of the 2nd Corps, fought at El Guettar, Sicily, Anzio, moved up Italian peninsula though Rome, Pisa, crossed Arno River and advanced into the Po Valley December 1944, remained in Italy though VE Day. Despite having spent 37 months overseas, most of it in a forward position, 1st Lt Souther never sustained a battle wound of any kind during the war.

He did not purposely reveal his volunteer enlistment to others. His serial number told the story for him. In those days serial numbers for volunteers began with “RA” which stood for Regular Army, draftees began with “US”.
